Christmas Markets & Music  November 24-December 5

Nobody does Christmas like Austria & Germany. The Cities, the squares and the shops all come alive with lights, music and the markets. The smell of the food stalls, the mulled wine and the great little gifts bring a special life to the cities.

This year we will visit Vienna, Nurnberg and Frankfurt to enjoy, not only the great outdoor markets and Christmas lights, but also to enjoy the music and the culture of these great places.  For example during our stay in Vienna we will take in dinner and a Mozart and Strauss Concert at the Orangerie of Schonbrunn Palace.

Each City is a three night stay in four star hotels right in the heart of the historic sections of these world famous - and World Heritage - Cities.  Step out of the door and you are near the markets, the shops and the historic core.

We’ll also be sightseeing in the outlying areas and smaller towns and just enjoying the great atmosphere of Europe at Christmas.

Itinerary -

November 24 - NH Hotel, Vienna International Airport - After you have cleared customs and have your luggage, you simply exit the terminal, cross the road and walk into the lobby of the NH hotel. No need for taxis or courtesy coaches. On checking in you will receive a package from us outlining our plans for the morning. Put your feet up and relax from your flight. You are on your own for dinner tonight but breakfast is included for the following morning.

November 25 - We will meet in the lobby at nine am before meeting our guide and setting off on an orientation tour of Vienna followed by a walking tour of the city centre including a visit to the splendid St. Stephan’s Cathedral and Figarohaus - where Mozart lived followed by a visit to the Christmas Markets.

November 26 - A visit to Schonbrunn Castle which rivals Versaille with an afternoon drive through the Vienna Woods and a visit to Mayerling where the son of Emperor Franz Joseph and his mistress committed suicide in the 19th century. This evening we dine at the Orangerie of Schonbrunn Castle before attending a Mozart & Strauss concert.

November 27 - A free day to explore the Christmas Markets, the Imperial Palace, the Museums, and maybe even a shop or two.  You are free to dine at any of the many cafés and restaurants near our hotel.

November 28 - On our way to Nurnberg we will make stops in Linz, where Johannes Kepler (the man who discovered Planetary motion) lived as well as the composer Anton Bruckner. Adolf Hitler also lived here for a number of years. Later we drive through Regensburg in Germany, known for its Medieval centre and three abbeys. Then it’s on to Nurnberg.

November 29 - An excursion today to Bamberg, a marvellous little town undamaged during the war and today one of the best examples of a medieval town in Europe. It’s a gem. Later we will carry on to Bayreuth where Richard Wagner lived and composed. Many of Wagner’s Operas were performed here. Hitler was one of the fans of Wagner and he often attended concerts in the town.

November 30 - We have a short exploration of Nurnberg including the medieval home of Albrecht Durer the famous artist and printer.  The rest of the day is free to explore this attractive city and to enjoy Europe’s oldest Christmas Market. You are also free for dinner this evening, perhaps just to grab a bite at the market or to enjoy the great restaurants nearby.

December 1 - Leaving Nurnberg we travel the German Romantic Street - a charming drive through most attractive countryside and through charming walled towns including Dinkelsbuhel and Rothenburg, an amazing medieval city. After lunch we continue our way into Frankfurt.

December 2 - Today we explore some of the countryside surrounding Frankfurt before returning to the city for a brief city tour and a relaxing dinner at the hotel.

December 3 - A free day to explore the city and the largest Christmas Market in Europe. If you really feel daring, you might want to rent a pair of skates and try the skating rink at the Market.  You also have time to explore other parts of the city and the shops for one last time. You are free to make your own dinner arrangements tonight.

Decmber 4 - A morning drive to the German Rhineland and the attractive town of Bacharach in the heart of the Rhineland Wine growing area. After lunch we head for our airport hotel and our last night together as a group.

December 5 - Departure Day from Frankfurt International Airport.
